Christian Liberty Part
Two
By Pastor Timothy Burdick
"Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, 'If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed.
And you will know the truth, and the truth
will set you free.'" (John 8:31-32)
In
these little verses, Jesus tells us how we
can obtain the fullness of Christian liberty
(freedom) in our lives. He tells us that in
our knowledge of Him as revealed in His
Word, the embodiment of truth will set us
free. This is important because many people
think truth alone will set us free, and
while it may be true in a general sense,
Jesus talks in these verses about how real
knowledge activates truth. As we study the
truth of God’s Word, we will get to know
Jesus in a deeper way, enabling God’s
freedom to come into each life that is open
to receive it.
Having
said this, let’s look at a couple of
examples of what He wants to set us free
from: Worry and anxiety are
two major areas that most of us have to work
on. While I have struggled with both of
these, I can also say that His Word has
brought me to new levels of trust, so I
continually grow in the freedom that He
speaks about.
Lastly
though, I would like to tell you about how
my freedom in Christ has brought me acceptance. As a person who has been
blind since birth, I didn’t have a lot of
friends when I was young. Although my
concept of self wasn’t terrible, it was
lacking in certain areas. When I came to
know Christ, I felt an acceptance that I had
never known. By studying His Word, I have
found a new freedom to be all that God has
created me to be.
Now God
is asking, what about you? How can this
freedom be an inspiring force in your life?
Ask God to shine the light of the Holy
Spirit on areas where He can free you from
habits, addictions, etc. For He also created
you to be all that you can be in Him, and as
you to grow in this dimension of the Word of
God, you will discover new horizons that
will continually "set
you free. "
