This  is by Pastor Timothy Burdick, Minister of Abilities for Friday Study Ministries:

Feelings or Commitment

But Ruth replied, 'Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God'” (Ruth 1:16)

A friend and I had a conversation that touched on commitment and I began thinking about it because we live in a day where we are driven by our feelings. While feelings have their place, if a thing doesn’t “feel” right, we tend to be sure that it wouldn’t be God’s will for our lives, but that is not necessarily the case.

Look at Ruth with me in terms of your own life. Because of her commitment to her mother-in-law she went to a foreign land, where she was introduced to a new language and a new culture. Would you and I have done that? Would we do that today if it meant serving God in the way we think we should? Later on in the Book of Ruth, it tells us how she had to work outside in the hot sun to support herself and her mother-in-law. Would you and I work in uncomfortable situations if it meant serving others, Serving God?

Centuries later, you will see the name of Ruth in the Genealogy seen in Chapter One of the Gospel of Matthew. So now, let’s compare what we have learned about Ruth in relation to the life of the Lord Jesus. The Bible talks about how Jesus had to leave His heavenly home to become one of us. He had to come to a foreign land (earth). Jesus not only had to work out in the hot sun, but spent many long nights in prayer. Ultimately, He died a hideous death for you and me, the cruelest type of death that was ever devised by man. Do you think that life for Jesus always felt good?

He used phrases like, “go the extra mile” and “lay down your lives.” Words and actions like these require an act of the will and can only be accomplished through the power of His Spirit.

Having said that, I am convinced that I can draw strength from God to live above my feelings and so can you. Spend time with Christ, not merely our of duty, but let the fact that He loves you wash over you in a new way. If you learn to love in this way and draw strength from His presence, then feelings of joy will follow.
